Technophobia affecting google street view

Google street view has been very helpful to people who are looking for directions and need a feel of the real or virtual environment of the place they are visiting before making a trip there. Some countries however do not have street view enabled on their roads whilst others have incomplete roads linking from one end to the other with still many undefined streets leftover due to reasons such as this.  Just as with many technological advances, there are pros and cons to good technologies and there are always people out there who oppose advances in technologies  or have technophobia.

The 100 point system in use

Aussie companies love to use the 100 point system to verify a client's eligibility to promotions for their sales products. If you ever wonder what is the 100 point system , the below is a list of the classification:

NOTE: you MUST have at least one item marked * next to point.
DRIVERS LICENSE* 30 POINTS

PASSPORT* 30 POINTS
PROOF OF AGE CARD* 30 POINTS

BIRTH CERTIFICATE* 30 POINTS
TENANCY HISTORY LEDGER 20 POINTS

PREVIOUS TENANCY AGREEMENT 20 POINTS
RENTAL BOND RECEIPT 20 POINTS

PREVIOUS MONTHLY RENT RECEIPTS 20 POINTS
PAY ADVICE 15 POINTS

MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION 15 POINTS
TELEPHONE ACCOUNT 15 POINTS

ELECTRICITY ACCOUNT 15 POINTS
GAS ACCOUNT 15 POINTS

BANK OR CREDIT CARD STATEMENTS 15 POINTS
PENSION CARD 15 POINTS

COUNCIL OR WATER RATES 15 POINTS
HEALTH CARE CARD 15 POINTS

MEDICARE CARD 15 POINTS

It really goes to show that they are still using a backward and legalistic system to check the integrity of a potential client. Compare this with a National identity card ID used elsewhere in the world.

Racism comments in Subway attack

What would you have done if you encountered or witness such a mindless attack ? Attack on Melbourne subway.

From most of the comments, it is understandable that no one wants to be a hero and become a zero unless he/she is confident of handling the situation. However from the posts of a majority commenters, to  label certain groups of people as having hatred for certain race or blaming the government for its emigration policy is both ridiculous and backward looking. Without emigration and foreign labor, aus will not be able to maintain its competitiveness to keep up with the global economy. People need to consider the fact that anyone from any races are equally guilty of heinous crimes.  Take the mindless attack on other races by a group of rural youths at Australia day 2009 , the cronulla riots and subsequent pelting of eggs..

Unfortunately, safety can only enforced by having adequate resource of policing or security resources, adequate meting out of justice and regulations (not the promotion of drug needle centers) , better security machinery and thorough emigration checks (not only for asylum but also for work visas). Until enough effort is made, Aus will remain as one of the top crime-ridden country in the world.

The face of the aussie consumer

Australian residents can be very choosy when it comes to buying second hand items.
Especially when their government is asking them to conserve more and spend less in this
current economic crisis.
Take a customer who recently tried to heckle with me about the dimensions of a TV:

She: I am interested in this . What is the size?
can u give for 30?

Me: Model is T-XXXX.
Dimensions are 507x427x397mm. Weight is approx. 10-12 kg.Let me know when you will be able to collect by email or SMS.Tks.

She:Thanks but im looking for bigger thatn 20 inches. cheers

Not sure if there were any innuendos through this. As a western nation with one of the
most populous obese people, Australians love their burger joints and have a thing or
so obession with the sizing metric. Probably they now are also concerned about the
length as well.

Another thing I found was that there are a couple of dishonest people who called to
request an item or two but never showed up after booking a time with you. No wonder
there are so many adverts nowadays that broadcast for "Serious buyers only". Wonder
if that is going to help much actually?

Clear and present danger

With my recent post on the ATM bandits saga, there is now a clear and imminent present danger which may hit the streets - and that is to do with identity theft. In this article from Security Focus, the dangers of RFID are addressed especially for people who are carrying biometric passports and credit cards. RFID is susceptible to a short distance While authorities are still insisting that this technology is safe, it might be worthwhile to invest on a simple RFID wallet with aluminium strips as described here. Afterall, RFID is remotely susceptible just as WIFI wireless.
