Australian rude

AUSTRALIANS doing business abroad better watch what they say, after a survey found Americans and British colleagues think we're rude.

Australians working overseas are most likely to offend in the US and the UK, according to an international workplace survey which found Britain and America have the strictest office etiquette.

In fact, workers in the US and UK are more sensitive even than business colleagues from etiquette-conscious Japan, China or the Middle East.

English and American business people were more offended by colleagues who use speakerphones, swearing and not being offered a drink than their international counterparts.

They also hate the distraction of personal guests visiting the workplace.

No "good morning" from colleagues when they start the day was also considered offensive, the survey found.

According to the survey of business people in 13 countries, the top five business pet peeves are: people who arrive at work without greeting their workmates, not offering office guests a drink, speaking too loudly across a room, swearing and using speakerphone.

Swearing was the issue that most divides Australians from their international business colleagues.

A quarter of Australians say it is perfectly acceptable to swear while doing business, while almost all of the English and Americans surveyed found it deeply offensive.

Almost 90 per cent of Japanese and 80 per cent of Middle Eastern participants also rated swearing as very offensive.

And while almost all Australians say they'd never hesitate to call their boss by a first name, this is considered rude by many Chinese businesspeople.

Australians are also considered rude when they speak too loudly, take personal calls at work and pry into the personal life of co-workers or business partners.

"Being aware of potentially offensive behaviour is a key factor to Australian business success abroad," said Taine Moufarrige, executive director of office company Servcorp, which conducted the survey in 13 countries.

Australian business people were more laid-back when it comes to office behaviour, but did say they were offended by colleagues who don't offer them a drink upon arrival or forget to buy them a drink.

Leadership change at Yahoo

There is a new CEO lady for Yahoo at the helm and she's Carol Bartz, whose credentials spanned Autodesk and Sun Microsystems. Yahoo failed to be sold to Microsoft and smotch a partnership with Google late last year. During Yahoo's legacy, they decided to do away with  yahoo photos and forced all users to migrate to Flickr, a company which they bought. If you have been using Yahoo Finance or yahoo answers, you will also notice that the quality of support has dropped tremendously (emails have gone unanswered)and one won't be sure if there's anyone actually providing support to it on the backend. Not sure what will the new changes mean and whether users (esp. Yahoo mail/Group users)will be forced again to accept some unprecedented changes with the new leadership...

Hamilton island publicity

In order to generate more publicity and interest in tourism into Hamilton island, the Tourism Queensland is offering some A$150 K for a lucky individual to work and live in the island. The only thing he has to do is maybe cleanup the pool, make friends with locals and probably blog about his adventures and escapades daily for six months. The the winner of this job most likely has to provide a really impressive reason why he would want this job to impress the interviewers or judges. Perhaps this is a role that former Guantanomo Bay convictee David Hicks or similar person running from the law should take up rather than jetting off to remote island called Vanautu. [ see source]

Fine for stooges

Talking about being fined and not in a "fine" city, this news is hilarious. This is a story about four stooges who are out to explore the wild life in Aussie. I thought it only happen in slapstick comedies :

"'Stupid' tourists fined after outback rescue

Two Korean tourists have been described as "plain stupid" by Northern Territory police after they became stranded on a dirt road that was closed because of flooding.

The tourists were travelling from Queensland to Darwin when they became bogged in the outback.

The main road artery leading into the Northern Territory has been closed since Saturday, when 100 metres of the road collapsed during heavy rain.

Despite road closure signs and barriers on the Barkly Highway west of Avon Downs, the pair decided to drive their Nissan van onto Rankin Road.

The dirt road runs from the Barkly Highway to the Tablelands Highway.

"The actions of these two were irresponsible and they placed themselves and rescuers at risk," Superintendent Bruce Porter said in a statement.

"These signs are put there for a reason, and for the public's safety."

Police rescued the pair on Thursday morning after their car became bogged about 50km from Avon Downs.

Supt Porter said the pair had been issued with a $90 traffic infringement notice for ignoring traffic control signs.

"I again reiterate to the public the importance of taking these warnings and closures seriously," Supt Porter said.

"There is no easy alternative to this level of flooding, and to assume that a dirt road would be any more passable than a bitumen road is just plain stupid.

"Common sense must prevail."

Supt Porter said the tourists had been escorted back to Camooweal, near the Queensland border.

Two men from Mt Isa were also fined after police found them on the Barkly Highway near the Rankin Road turnoff.

The pair alerted police to the stranded Koreans.

They told the officers they had travelled from Mt Isa to see the flooding for themselves as they did not believe the media reports.

The Barkly Highway is expected to remain closed for at least three weeks.

A Martial Arts Grandmaster's story
This time the focus is on an Asian film. The film "IPMAN" tells of the story of a martial-arts grandmaster from Foshan in China who popularised the martial art of "Wingchun" and who was also the teacher of the legendary Bruce Lee. It is a story filled with human-characteristics - both good and bad and without the fanfare or modern special-effects that most pugilistic movies are now made of. Born into a wealthy inheritance, he did not have to work nor contend with others but there are always people who sought him out for a quick challenge just as there are competitors emerging everywhere now where business is stable and secure or where the industry is generating revenue. It is only when the Japanese war or WWII started, that IPMAN has to strive for a living after his property was confiscated. It shows that no matter how gifted a person is or the wealth of his circumstances, there can always be something that can override all that and cast him down. However through it all, he still managed to maintain his integrity, his fearless front for the unknown and his love for his country (How many of us may keep our logic and reasoning when faced with calamity ?) . With his charisma, the townsfolk respected and rose for a short time against the unruly Japanese soldiers. This film is similar in many  respects to Jet Li's "Fearless" but the story is more eventful, and I feel is more rooted and down-to-earth . Afterall, the kungfu of "Wingchun" (whose originator happen to be a female) is one of the leading martial artforms even here in Sydney /OZ and it also happen to be the clan that hosts most of the lion dances which you can see during CNY. According to news articles in us.imdb.de, there is even a prospect of a sequel to this movie which may even have Bruce Lee as a major character in the movie.
