A Martial Arts Grandmaster's story
This time the focus is on an Asian film. The film "IPMAN" tells of the story of a martial-arts grandmaster from Foshan in China who popularised the martial art of "Wingchun" and who was also the teacher of the legendary Bruce Lee. It is a story filled with human-characteristics - both good and bad and without the fanfare or modern special-effects that most pugilistic movies are now made of. Born into a wealthy inheritance, he did not have to work nor contend with others but there are always people who sought him out for a quick challenge just as there are competitors emerging everywhere now where business is stable and secure or where the industry is generating revenue. It is only when the Japanese war or WWII started, that IPMAN has to strive for a living after his property was confiscated. It shows that no matter how gifted a person is or the wealth of his circumstances, there can always be something that can override all that and cast him down. However through it all, he still managed to maintain his integrity, his fearless front for the unknown and his love for his country (How many of us may keep our logic and reasoning when faced with calamity ?) . With his charisma, the townsfolk respected and rose for a short time against the unruly Japanese soldiers. This film is similar in many  respects to Jet Li's "Fearless" but the story is more eventful, and I feel is more rooted and down-to-earth . Afterall, the kungfu of "Wingchun" (whose originator happen to be a female) is one of the leading martial artforms even here in Sydney /OZ and it also happen to be the clan that hosts most of the lion dances which you can see during CNY. According to news articles in us.imdb.de, there is even a prospect of a sequel to this movie which may even have Bruce Lee as a major character in the movie.

Your health is your wealth in the new year !
The film "Seven Pounds" is one of the better films with a superb storyline just before the end of 2008 . It's a must-watch film if you like Will Smith's narrative voice in the background - as in "I am legend" as opposed to Morgan Freeman's which has just been used in every other Hollywood movies or documentary.
Just like "Merchant of Venice", seven pounds of flesh refer to the debt that needs to be paid and in this story's case, the debt of causing the death of six innocent lives in a car accident. The movie makes you re-think also the society treatment of blind people in general, as well as the conscience of drivers who caused fatal accidents and are still driving on the roads today without any tinge of  regret.
I am not sure if this film will generate a copy-cat cult for some film-watchers for the better good of society (minus the gross suicide, of course). Afterall, there were quite a number of films which generated controversy by having people imitate and execute their actions copy-cat style (Think Superman, Escape from Alcatraz, Mission Impossible). But if you are still in two minds on the Organs donation Bill or Act, this is a definite MUST show to watch as it may change your mindset after watching.

New year hopes and resolutions ?
The outgoing president Bush Jr has been rated with devastating results for the last decade of US presidency. (see here). If each one of us were rated based on what we did or did not do for the past year, how would we fare ? Maybe if we had time , we could pass handouts or setup an online survey for the people we had conenctions or liasons with over the past year and see if our results compared with our past successes or failures need a pepping-up or a standing-down ovation.

For the oncoming new year, what do you hope to see ? For me, in terms of upcoming and new emerging technologies: i would like to see in 2009 - just six of them:

  • - cheaper solar cells and hydrogen energy capsules to powerup everyday electrical appliance
  • - ability to have services startup differently for user profiles instead of centrally controlled services (usually administrator based)
  • - ease of use of VMWare in expanding virtual disk size (together with OS recognition of disksize expansion) instead of wholescale migration.
  • - RSS link for cityrail info (I doubt very much the realisation of this, trust me !)
  • -More profileration of ISO and virtual VMDK images with applications like SQL, Oracle, Net monitoring tools, instead of plain OS images.
  • -Greater number of acquisitions of job agencies so that less agencies to contend with, job databases can be centralised and unprofessional recruitment agents be eliminated to cater to the needs of people out there who are desperate for a job and having issues searching.

Anyway, here's a happy and hopefully successful new year to one and all !

Afraid of data loss?
In the world of data management, perhaps the best kind of storage network is the one where you have the media presently publicly displayed and stored everywhere else. Thanks to celebrities like Edison and Shane Warne for their examples -  A journalist for zdnet.com.au writes his version of the story here.
